OREM, UT--- The California Baptist University volleyball team could not get back on the winning side of the column on Saturday afternoon as they fell victim to the red-hot Utah Valley Wolverines on the road in straight sets.
The Lancers looked up to the challenge early in the opening set of the match as they would lead 7-5 against the top-seeded Wolverines. CBU would hold the lead for the next few rallies before a 10-2 UVU run would flip the momentum and give the Wolverines a 19-11 lead. That sizable lead would hold as the home squad would take the opening frame 25-18 for the 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines jumped out to an early lead in the second set, but the Lancers bounced right back with a 7-2 run, led by a strong Olivia Melton service run, to take a one-point lead. UVU responded immediately with a 5-1 run to force a Trevor Johnson timeout and flip the momentum back in its favor. The Wolverines would close out the set with an identical score as the opening set, winning 25-18 over the Lancers for the 2-0 lead.
The third set was back-and-forth early, with both teams instigating scoring runs to keep the match close. The Wolverines would lead by as many as eight points in the set at 17-9, but CBU would come right back with a 6-1 run led by a 4-0 service run from setter Reese Reed. The run forced UVU to call a timeout and attempt to stop the Lancer momentum. The Wolverines would flex their blocking prowess with some critical blocks down the stretch, resulting in yet another 25-18 set victory. The set victory would help the Wolverines win their 18th consecutive set, which is a program record.
The Lancers got strong performances on the outside from Melton and Emery DeJong, who each had 13 kills to lead the CBU offense. For Melton, it was a season-high in kills, and she would also lead the team in digs with six. For DeJong, it was a continuation of strong play over the past few games and would be her third consecutive game with double-digit kills.
NEXT: The Lancers will return home for a pair of home games beginning with a match against Southern Utah on Thursday, November 6.
