RIVERSIDE --- The third and final leg of CBU's three-game homestand takes place on Friday night, as the Lancers will welcome Grambling State to the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center. In their first-ever meeting with the Tigers, the Lancers will look to become the second team in CBU's Division I era to start the year 5-0.
CBU is coming off an 80-57 rout of UC Riverside on Tuesday, which improved the Lancers' record to 4-0. The 2021-22 team is the only one in program history to open the year 4-0 at the DI level, as their start reached five straight wins before eventually losing in their sixth trip to the court.
Friday night will be Salute to Service Night in the Fowler Events Center, as all branches of the U. S. Armed Forces will be honored.
The Lancers kicked off this homestand on Friday, November 14, with a 69-59 victory against Western Illinois. CBU is 3-0 at home to start the season, with other wins coming against UC Riverside and South Carolina – Upstate.
Tuesday's win against the Highlanders was a collective effort, as five Lancers scored in double-figures. Dominique Daniels Jr. led the charge with 25 points, including an 8-for-8 showing at the free-throw line. Jayden Jackson and Martel Williams each dropped a dozen, while Jonathan Griman and Devon Malcolm both scored ten.
The Lancers also controlled the game on the defensive end as they matched the program's single-game DI record of 12 steals. Daniels Jr. led the team with three steals, followed by Jackson and Malcolm, who each had two.
Eight Lancers picked up a steal on Tuesday night.
Grambling State comes into Friday night with a 3-2 record to start the season, but they lost their last game against San Diego. San Diego will be next on the Lancers' schedule.
The Tigers come into the game averaging 73.8 PPG, and are led by Antonio Munoz, who is averaging 13.6 PPG. Jamil Muttilib (12.4) and Jimel Lane (10.8) are also averaging double-figures.
Friday's meeting with the Tigers will be the first matchup of CBU and GSU in program history. Grambling State is one of eight first-time opponents the Lancers will take on in their 12-game non-conference slate.
After Friday night, CBU will hit the road for six straight away from Riverside. The Lancers' next home game will be on December 16 when Southern University comes to town.
