OREM, UT --- The top two teams during non-conference action met on opening night of the WAC season, as the Lancers visited Utah Valley on Monday. After a six-point lead for the Lancers entering halftime, momentum flipped in the second half, leading to a 73-66 win for Utah Valley.
CBU opens WAC action 0-1 and now sits 10-4 overall. Utah Valley improves to 11-3 with a 1-0 start in conference play.
Dominique Daniels Jr. was once again the offensive leader for CBU. The graduate guard out of Compton dropped 17 points to pair with three rebounds and a block. Martel Williams and Jonathan Griman each contributed a dozen points.
Griman, along with Thomas Ndong, led the rebound efforts with seven each.
The Lancers started strong, scoring the first five points of the night via Jayden Jackson. Jackson returned to the starting lineup for the first time since suffering an injury on November 21. Miles Daniels also returned to the floor on Monday, playing for the first time since CBU's opening night win against USC-Upstate.
CBU built its largest lead of the night, six, near the end of the first half when a pair of free throws from Daniels Jr. put CBU on top 39-33. That score led to halftime, pointing to a good result for the Lancers, who entered the night 9-1 when leading at intermission.
Monday flipped that trend, as UVU outscored the Lancers by 13 in the second half, giving CBU just its second loss when leading at the break. Monday also snapped a 6-0 streak for CBU when scoring the first basket of the night.
Jackson Holcombe led UVU's second-half charge, as he scored 14 of his game-leading 25 points in the closing 20 minutes. Trevan Leonhardt also finished in double figures with 14.
CBU dominated the glass on Monday, improving its season rebound margin to 9.4. The Lancers entered Monday at No. 27 in Division I. UVU sat ahead of CBU at No. 21 in that category. The Lancers pulled down 36 boards to 21 from the Wolverines.
The Lancers are now 10-2 when outrebounding their foe, with both losses occurring in the Beehive State.
CBU will continue WAC action on New Year's Day as two games in Texas await the Lancers. First will be a trip to UT Arlington on Thursday for a noon (PT) tip. The road trip wraps up on Saturday with a visit to Tarleton State.
The Lancers will return to Riverside on January 8 to welcome Utah Tech to the Fowler Events Center.
