RIVERSIDE - California Baptist women's basketball faced off against Grand Canyon in Riverside on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Lopes 74-56. The result drops CBU to 7-5 in Western Athletic Conference play, while the win clinches at least a share of the regular season championship for the Lopes.
Grace Schmidt had her work cut out for her today, scoring 14 points on 7-9 shooting while taking all the contact the Lopes could throw at her. Khloe Lemon also added 14 points, hitting four three-pointers along the way. And CeCe Legaspi was the final Lancer in double digits with 11, also grabbing seven boards.
Both teams shot incredibly well throughout the game as GCU hit 50% (28-56) from the field and 50% (11-22) from distance, while CBU wasn't too far behind at 48% (21-44) and 33.3% (10-30). The difference came in two primary stat lines: turnovers where GCU forced CBU into 24 total, the most in a single game this season, and free throws where the Lancers hit just 4-13 (31%), another seasons-worst mark.
The Lopes owned a 42-21 advantage by halftime, largely thanks to their 11 first-half steals. The Lancers fought back in the third and beginning of the fourth, reducing the spread to 13 to start the final period, but consistent shooting from the Lopes won out.
CBU remains at home next week, hosting Seattle U and Utah Tech on Thursday and Saturday. Thursday's game against the Redhawks will begin at 6:00 p.m.
