RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team got back on the winning side on Thursday night as they downed the Seattle U Redhawks 81-68 in Riverside.
The second half was the catalyst for the Lancers as they would put up 45 points on 56% shooting to move their record to 8-5 in Western Athletic Conference play. The win puts CBU firmly in fourth place in the standings, sitting just one game behind Tarleton and UT Arlington, who they will face in the final week of the season.
It was a rocky start for both squads in the opening frame, but four made triples by the Lancers would give them a slim lead through the first ten minutes of action. Perimeter dominance would be a theme throughout the evening for the Lancers as they would wind up outscoring the Redhawks by 21 in that department. A large reason for the disparity was the duo of Khloe Lemon and Nhug Bosch Duran, who would combine for 40 points on four made threes apiece in the win.
Seattle U would throw their best shot at CBU in the second period and would even take a brief lead at 32-31 with 2:16 remaining. The deficit did not last long for the Lancers as Shawnee Nordstrom would connect on back-to-back buckets on the ensuing possession to help CBU lead 36-35 heading into the locker room.
The Redhawks would again take a minuscule lead in the opening minutes of the second half, but CBU would quickly erase that with an 8-0 run. The Lancers would never look back from that point and would balloon their lead to as many as 12 in the third period. That lead would grow to 19 in the fourth quarter and eventually settle at 81-68 in favor of the home team. Lemon would finish with a game-high 22 points for her third 20+ point performance over the last four games. Emma Johansson and Nordstrom were masterful off the bench, with a combined 29 points on 11-17 shooting. Johansson put together an all-around game by adding in seven rebounds, three assists, and four blocks.
As a unit, the Lancers shot 53% from the floor, which was their third-best shooting display of the season, and also connected on 48% of their triples. CBU dominated the bench 29-14 and would assist on 24 of their 29 made shots.
CBU will be back in the Fowler Events Center on Saturday, March 1, at 1 PM against Utah Tech for Senior Day.
