CARY, N.C. --- USA Baseball today announced the preseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award presented by Chinook Seedery, beginning the process of identifying the best amateur baseball player in the nation for the 2025 season. For the second time in California Baptist baseball program history, a Lancer has earned a spot on the prestigious list in none other than junior Nicholas Dumesnil.
Dumesnil's preseason accolades prove to be a long list, but this type of award stands alone at the top. Since 1978, USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden Spikes Award. The award, which is presented on ESPN annually, goes to the amateur baseball player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship. The preseason list includes 55 players across high school and college baseball, exemplifying the current best of the best. Dumesnil is the lone Western Athletic Conference player named to the list and is just the second Lancer in program history to be honored, behind 2016 MLB Draft pick Tyson Miller. Overall, 41 schools and 12 conferences are represented on the 2025 Preseason Watch List. The Southeastern Conference (SEC) leads all conferences with 17 players, followed by the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) with 14 and the Big 12 Conference with six.
The Golden Spikes Advisory Board will maintain the award's watch list on a rolling basis, allowing athletes to play themselves into consideration for the award based on in-season performance. The Midseason list is expected to be announced on April 3rd, and from there, baseball fans can vote for their favorite players on GoldenSpikesAward.com with the naming of the semifinalists and finalists. The 2025 Golden Spikes Award winner will be announced in late June in conjunction with the end of the amateur baseball season.
