NORTHRIDGE, CA--- The California Baptist University Lancers opened up their season against Pacific at the Ridge Invitational on Friday afternoon, falling in a four-set match.
It was a slow start for the Lancers in the opening frame as they quickly fell behind 11-7 to force an early Trevor Johnson timeout. CBU caught its footing out of the break, scoring six of the next eight points, which included a pair of Emery DeJong service aces. CBU would expand its lead to as many as three down the stretch, and a DeJong kill would end the set 25-22 in favor of the Lancers.
The second set was an offensive showcase for both sides as a total of 58 points were scored between the two squads. CBU would jump out to the early advantage, but that would quickly be erased by the Tigers, who would tie the game at 13 apiece. The Lancers could never gain a comfortable lead, and the Tigers would exploit some costly errors by the Lancers to force extra points in the frame. Both teams would face set points on multiple occasions, but Pacific would come away with the 30-28 victory to tie the match.
The third was the most lopsided as the Tigers gained early momentum and would never relinquish en route to the 25-12 victory and a 2-1 set lead. The fourth set would also get away from the Lancers as Pacific would gain the early lead and ride the momentum to the 25-20 set win.
Jordyn Waite-Ward put together a solid debut for the Lancers, collecting 11 kills on 18 attacks and leading the match with three solo blocks. DeJong led the offensive attack with 15 kills while Maddie Brown put up a career-high 29 assists in her first game since 2023.
NEXT: The Lancers will be back tomorrow afternoon to take on Idaho State on Day two of the Ridge Invitational. First serve is set for 2 PM PT.
