SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA--- The California Baptist University volleyball team dropped the second match of the SLO Classic on Friday afternoon as the Saint Mary's Gaels took home the victory 3-0 at the Mott Athletics Center.
The loss drops CBU to 4-7 in non-conference action, while the Gaels improved to 2-8.
The Lancers faced an early deficit in the opening set, falling behind by as many as five points ahead of the media timeout. The Lancers got themselves back in the game behind the offensive play of Emery DeJong and Eliana Posada to eventually tie the game at 21 apiece to force the Gaels to burn their final timeout. Saint Mary's would get its offense restarted out of the break and register three kills on the next couple of rallies to earn them the 25-22 set victory and the 1-0 start.
The second set was all Gaels from the jump as they scored points on the first eight rallies of the frame. The Lancers tried to pull themselves back into the contest with a 4-0 run, but the deficit was too steep, and St. Mary's would win the set 25-16 to hold a daunting 2-0 advantage over the Lancers. The third set started off strong for the Lancers, but they could not sustain the momentum, and the Gaels would take advantage with three separate 4-0 runs to put away CBU 25-17 and take the match.
DeJong paced the Lancers with 11 kills while Posada came in next with nine.
NEXT: CBU will wrap up its trip to San Luis Obispo tomorrow afternoon as it takes on the host school, Cal Poly, at 4 PM.
