SAN LUIS OBISPO--- The California Baptist University volleyball squad dropped the final match of the SLO Classic on Saturday evening in straight sets as they took on the host school, Cal Poly.
The match was the final one of non-conference action for the Lancers, and the loss dropped them to 4-8 as they head into Western Athletic Conference play next week. The win for Cal Poly brings them to 9-3 and helped them sweep their home tournament 3-0.
Fresh off an upset win over #20 Utah less than 24 hours ago, the Cal Poly Mustangs came out with momentum on the final day of the SLO Classic. The host school was specifically solid on the blocks as the Lancers could not find easy offense in the opening set of action. Cal Poly would build its lead slowly and then go on a big run late to take the opening frame 25-15.
The second set was also trending toward the Mustangs for the majority of the period, but with the score sitting at 20-11 in favor of the home team, CBU would make a run at Cal Poly. The Lancers would score nine of the next ten points, led by a Mia Rossman service run to get within one point of the Mustangs. Cal Poly would call a timeout and gather its composure, scoring four of the next five points to take the set 25-21.
The Mustangs would not slow down in the third set and would take the match in straight sets with the 25-17 set victory. Eliana Posada and Emery DeJong each had nine kills to lead the Lancers, while Simge Yuksel had a season-high 13 digs and five assists as the starting libero.
NEXT: The Lancers will return home to open conference action against Tarleton on Thursday, September 25, at 5 PM in the Fowler Events Center.
