RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team hosted its annual Events Center Match to open conference play on Thursday evening as they welcomed in the Tarleton Texans to the Fowler Events Center.
The Texans got off to a hot start in the match and rode the momentum to a three-set victory despite a career night from Eliana Posada of the Lancers. CBU drops to 4-9 on the season as the Texans improve to 7-6.
Tarleton got off to a quick start, building a 9-3 lead to cause Head Coach Trevor Johnson to burn an early timeout. The Lancers tried to fight their way back into the match, but Tarleton's defense made it tough on the home squad, and the Texans would take set one 25-15 for the 1-0 match lead. The second set would also feature a fast start for the Texans as they jumped out to a 6-2 advantage out of the gates. CBU would stop the bleeding with a 3-0 response and eventually would get the match all even at 11 apiece. The Lancers then got a critical service run from Simge Yuksel to build a three-point lead and force the Texans to huddle up. Out of the huddle, the Texans would handle business and hold off the Lancer comeback 25-23 for the 2-0 lead.
The Lancers would avoid a slow start in the third set and came out with a 6-1 scoring run to begin the frame. The Texans would never get within three points the rest of the period as the Lancers found tremendous success with the combination of Lucy Ryan and Posada on the right side. CBU would force a fourth set with the 25-15 victory in set three.
The fourth set was a battle as the Lancers tried to force a fifth set, and the Texans would attempt to avoid surrendering a second consecutive set. The set went back and forth as the squads played their best volleyball of the match under the bright lights of the Events Center. CBU would take the first real momentum swing of the match with a scoring run that resulted in a 20-15 lead, forcing Tarleton into a timeout. The Texans came back in force to tie the match at 22, forcing the Lancers to burn a timeout. A Texan service error gave CBU a one-point advantage, but the Texans would score the next three points to claim the set and the match.
Despite the loss, Posada posted a career-best 19 kills on a phenomenal .485 hitting percentage. Ryan was a spark plug off the bench and contributed a season-high nine kills while Emery DeJong and Jordyn Waite-Ward contributed a combined 22 kills to lead the way for Coach Johnson's offense.
NEXT: The Lancers will remain at home to take on Abilene Christian on Saturday, September 27, at 1 PM.
