RIVERSIDE--- The short-handed California Baptist University volleyball team picked up its first Western Athletic Conference victory of the season, besting Abilene Christian in four sets in Riverside.
The Lancers got off to a hot start behind a mid-set 5-0 service run by Mia Rossman that opened up a 12-6 lead for the home team. The Wildcats tried to put themselves in position for a comeback, but CBU continued to execute scoring runs and would eventually claim the first period by a score of 25-17. ACU would answer back in the ensuing set, executing a 9-2 finish to even the match at one set apiece.
The third set was the most pivotal of the match as both teams vied for control. CBU fell behind 18-13 to force Trevor Johnson to call a timeout to chat with his team. Out of the 75-second break, the Lancers would score four of the next five to cause the Wildcats to call their first timeout. The Lancers would eventually tie the set at 21 for the first time since the early going off a Jordyn Waite-Ward ace. CBU would score the final four points of the frame to win 25-22 and take the all-important 2-1 lead.
The fourth set was all Lancers as they jumped out to an early lead and would hold it through the majority of the period. CBU led by as many as seven in the set, and a Waite-Ward kill off a perfectly-placed ball by Maddie Brown would secure the victory 25-18 and the 3-1 match win.
With the injuries starting to pile up, Lucy Ryan would step up in a big way for the Lancers, recording nine kills on 15 attacks for a .600 hitting percentage. The Lancers were excellent on the blocks with 12 as a team, led by Ryan with six, and Waite-Ward and Eliana Posada with five apiece. Brown contributed 31 assists at setter while Emery Dejong posted a team-high 12 kills.
NEXT: The Lancers will hit the road next week for the first conference road trip of the season against Utah Tech and Southern Utah.
