RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University women's volleyball team competed hard on Saturday night, but they would ultimately come up short to CSUN in four sets in Riverside.
The loss continues the Lancers' recent slide, as they drop to 3-14 overall and 0-6 in conference action.
The Matadors dominated the opening set, capitalizing on numerous service errors from the Lancers, and would take an early 1-0 set lead by a score of 25-15. The Lancers would respond in set two as they would utilize a crucial 9-3 mid-set run from their offense to capture a 19-14 lead and force back-to-back CSUN timeouts. CSUN would slice the lead all the way down to one point at 20-19, but the Lancers would reply with a 3-0 run that would ultimately lead to a 25-22 victory and tie the match up at one set apiece.
CBU would start off well in set three as they would build an early four-point lead. The Matadors kept the score close, but a 5-2 Lancer run would extend the lead back to four points at 20-16, leading to a CSUN timeout. Out of the timeout, CSUN would score seven of the next eight points to take a two-point lead, 23-21. A block by Jana Cetkovic and Eleftheria Baxa and a kill by Anaiya Campbell would send the set to extra points. CSUN would score the lone two points of the extras to take the critical set three victory.
CBU would once again start the fourth set well as they held an early 4-1 lead, but it would be all downhill from there as the Matadors would build a 19-11 lead that would force Trevor Johnbson to use both of his timeouts. The lead would ultimately balloon to 12 as the Matadors closed out the Lancers 25-13 and won the match in four sets in Van Dyne Gym.
Campbell led the offense with 11 kills and would make it a double-double with 11 digs, followed by Audrey Heiring with seven kills. The blocking was elite as usual for the Lancers, as they outblocked CSUN 16-9, led by Baxa, Cetkovic, and Bella Breuer with four blocks apiece. Avery Barber led the way with 25 assists while Jagoda Bialek had a team-high 12 digs.
NEXT: The Lancers will hit the road next weekend, beginning with a trip to San Luis Obispo against Cal Poly on Friday, October 16, at 6 PM.
