LONG BEACH, Calif. – Sophomore Abigail Skinder led the Lancers with a ninth-place finish in the women's 5K at the MPSF Open Water Championship on Saturday, as four CBU swimmers placed in the top 21 and the Lancers fielded five teams in the 2,000-meter relay.
"A strong start to the day with four placers in the top 21 of the women's 5K. Awesome day to showcase our distance talent on our team and then amazing to have every athlete on the 2,000-meter relay," said head coach Jim Bosert.
It's fun to have a team event like this where we can all be together for a day and each athlete isn't competing every 20 minutes. This open water event is just a fun time for us to be together and to be able to have some team bonding away from a normal pool but also maintain our competitive edge as we end preseason and get into our invite and competitive season for the year."
Skinder finished ninth overall with a time of 1:03.57, placing seventh among school-affiliated swimmers after two unattached competitors finished ahead of her.
Freshman Kona Flanagan followed in 14th place with a time of 1:04.35, while senior Kai Flanagan, Kona's sister, finished 17th in 1:05.44. Freshman Jeanne-Lise Gauthier rounded out the Lancers' top 21 finishers, taking 21st in 1:06.41.
In the women's 2,000-meter relay, CBU fielded five teams, the most of any school in the competition. The Lancers' A team led the way, finishing seventh out of 20 teams with a time of 27:52.9.
The A team consisted of Kai Flanagan, Kona Flanagan, freshman Omer Shwartz and Gauthier. CBU's B team was the next Lancers squad to finish, followed by the D, C and E teams.
Full results for the Championship can be found HERE.
The Lancers will return to competition next Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite in Claremont, Calif.
