RIVERSIDE – CBU women's swimming continues its fall season Saturday, traveling to Claremont to compete against Pomona-Pitzer, The Master's, San Diego and Whittier College.
Saturday's meet marks the second consecutive year CBU has faced Pomona-Pitzer. The programs primarily competed against each other during CBU's time in Division II. The Lancers traveled to Claremont last season, falling to the Sagehens by eight points in a close dual meet.
CBU also faced San Diego for the first time last season, earning a victory by more than 50 points. Saturday will mark the first-ever meetings between the Lancers and both The Master's University and Whittier College.
In last year's meet at Claremont, Iyanah Samayoa led the way with a first-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke and a second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. Camille Cottier won the 200-yard butterfly, with Avery Easterling finishing close behind. Kai Flanagan added a first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle and placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle.
CBU opened its season at the Rodionoff Invitational in Malibu, recording nine top-three finishes across two days of competition. Freshman Faith Fasani placed second in the 200-yard freestyle, while junior Angelica Benitez took second in the 200-yard backstroke and freshman Emilie Bawono finished runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke.
The Lancers most recently finished fourth at the MPSF Open Water Championship in Long Beach, led by sophomore Abigail Skinder's ninth-place finish in the women's 5K. Four Lancers placed in the top 21, while CBU fielded five teams in the 2,000-meter relay, the most of any school in the competition.
Following a productive start to the season, CBU looks to continue building momentum while giving its 14 newcomers, including 12 freshmen, more opportunities to gain experience.
Fasani, Benitez and Bawono will look to lead the Lancers this weekend. Fasani holds CBU's fastest times in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle, while Benitez leads the team in the 200-yard individual medley, 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard butterfly. Bawono leads the Lancers in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard backstroke events as CBU takes on three opponents in Claremont.
