LOS ANGELES, CA --- California Baptist men's basketball unofficially tipped off the 2026-27 season on Wednesday, as the Lancers visited historic Pauley Pavilion for an exhibition against No. 22 UCLA. Competing in the first exhibition of the year, the season's dress rehearsal ended with the hosting Bruins claiming a 100-53 victory.
Wednesday marked the first exhibition for CBU under first-year head coach Kyle Getter. Getter was named the second head coach of the Lancers' Division I era in April.
This was the first time playing in front of people for a lot of these guys, said Getter. I kept telling the guys to play to our standard. Don't play to the scoreboard, play to our standard.
The Lancers were led in scoring by Jordan Muller and Steven Reynolds III, both finishing with ten points. Reynolds III connected on 3-of-8 from the field, with all three of his baskets being 3-pointers. Muller closed the night shooting 2-for-5 while adding a perfect 5-for-5 showing at the charity stripe.
Justas Stonkus was next in scoring with eight points on 3-of-8 from the floor. Ethan Duncan also closed the night scoring eight. Aleksa Milenkovic pulled down a team-high six boards.
CBU shot 30 percent (18-for-61), while knocking down 9-of-33 from distance. The Bruins ended the night posting a 45 percent clip from the field.
Credit to UCLA, they sped us up on the offensive end, added Getter. Their physicality and length bothered us at times.
UCLA, a program named the No. 22 team in the country in the AP Preseason Poll, was led by Eric Dailey Jr., who finished with 25 points on 9-of-13 from the field. Dailey Jr. also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.
Six other Bruins closed the night in double figures: Joe Philon III (13), Jaylen Petty (12), Niko Kusturica (10), Azavi Robinson (10), and Filip Jovic (10).
On moving forward from Wednesday's loss, Getter noted, I was proud of our effort tonight. We came into this game thinking it was a learning experience. I'm excited to watch the film and see what we can improve on leading up to November 3.
The Lancers will formally begin Getter's tenure with the program on November 3 when CBU welcomes North Florida to the Dale E. and Sarah Ann Fowler Events Center. CBU will come into their season opener having won 19 in a row at home, dating back to the 2024-25 season.
