RIVERSIDE --- Sophomore Nico Coope has been named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week following his two-goal performance in last week's win over UC Santa Barbara. Coope becomes the fourth CBU player to be recognized by the conference this season with a weekly honor.
Coope had a career-best showing in last week's midweek visit to Santa Barbara. The sophomore, who was making his first start of the season, scored two of the Lancers' four goals in a 4-1 victory. The win proved to be big for the Lancers in terms of RPI positioning, as CBU jumped from No. 60 to No. 42 thanks to the quad one victory.
The Lancers are now positioned at No. 35 in the RPI after a quad-two win over UC Irvine on Saturday.
Coope's first goal of the week came in the 20th minute when he received the ball off a deflection, creating a one-on-one look with the goalkeeper. Coope beat the keeper on the far post to give the Lancers a 1-0 advantage.
His second goal of the night came in the 70th minute, which answered a goal from UCSB six minutes prior. The 70th-minute goal pushed the Lancers' lead to 3-1 and came off an assist from Felix Ezekwuka. Ezekwuka later added a goal of his own in the 89th minute.
A sophomore out of Tacoma, WA, Coope is tied for third on the Lancers with four goals.
The Lancers closed out the regular season last week with a pair of non-conference victories, sending CBU into the postseason with an overall mark of 12-3-2. The 12 wins are the most by CBU since transitioning to Division I in 2018.
CBU drew the second seed in the Pac-12 Championship, and with that, the Lancers claimed the right to host their semifinal match. The Lancers will welcome back San Diego State to Riverside on Saturday at 7 p.m. In their previous meeting this season, SDSU played CBU to a scoreless draw, the only time CBU has been held without a goal in the last two seasons.
