LA JOLLA, CA --- California Baptist no longer has to wonder where they will be on November 7, as Saturday's result locked in a top-two seed in the Pac-12 Tournament. After falling into a two-goal deficit in the second half, the Lancers struck for two late goals to walk out of La Jolla with a 2-2 draw against UC San Diego.
Saturday's result moves the Lancers into solo first place in the Pac-12 with 11 points, mathematically guaranteeing CBU a top-two seed in the postseason. The top two seeds will host their conference semifinal match on November 7, with the highest remaining seed hosting the conference championship the following week.
UCSD struck first on Saturday when Tyler Cash put the Tritons on the board in the 38th minute. Forty minutes of soccer later, the Lancers conceded another goal as Adam Dunbar doubled the Tritons' lead with his strike from 25 yards out.
"I thought we started the game well, but we were not ruthless enough," noted coach Coe Michaelson after the match. "Then they hit two golazos and we find ourselves in a position we probably shouldn't have been."
The Lancers, however, wasted no time in getting the goal back, as 54 seconds after falling into a 2-0 hole, Stavros Charalampous netted his second goal of the year to pull the Lancers within one. The goal was set up from a Luis Borrero cross, who played the ball to Charalampous inside the penalty area. Charalampous knocked it in on his first touch.
An attacking mindset remained as the Lancers looked to, at a minimum, leave La Jolla with a draw. The press paid off in the 84th minute when CBU knocked in the equalizer.
Freshman Haruna Lukwago was the one to level the contest as he scored his first collegiate goal off assists from Blake D'Agostino and William Lawson. Lawson played the ball up to D'Agostino, who then flicked the ball back to Lukwago on his first touch. Lukwago took one touch towards his left before firing a left-footed strike inside the near post.
The Lancers would get a corner kick in the 87th minute, but no shot attempts would come after the tying goal, as the contest concluded in a draw.
"I'm happy that we fought back, but we shouldn't need to fall behind to find that next gear, to play with more urgency," Michaelson added. "Ultimately, we need to learn and grow from these lessons this week as we start to eye the postseason."
Results around the Pac-12 were favorable for the Lancers on Saturday, as UC Riverside defeated San Diego State. A win for SDSU would have placed the Aztecs on nine points, giving them an opportunity to jump the Lancers in the standings next week with another win. SDSU's loss, paired with the CBU draw, guaranteed the Lancers no worse than a second-place finish.
A win on Saturday, however, would have clinched the Lancers at least a share of the Pac-12 regular season championship. Oregon State will conclude its conference season next weekend against Gonzaga, a team that won its first conference match on Saturday. The Lancers can clinch a co-championship with an OSU draw, or take the outright title with an OSU loss. Should Oregon State and CBU finish tied, the Beavers will own the top-seed in the conference tournament due to head-to-head record.
The Lancers have two matches remaining in the regular season, both non-conference bouts, as Saturday ended CBU's Pac-12 regular season. The Lancers will visit UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday to make up their postponed match from last week. The regular season then concludes on October 31 with a 2 p.m. match vs. UC Irvine.
