STEPHENVILLE, TX--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team would remain undefeated in conference road games on Saturday afternoon as they would defeat the Tarleton Texans 76-67 in Stephenville.
The win continues to keep the Lancers atop the Western Athletic Conference standings at 13-3 as the race for the one-seed continues to heat up in the final weeks of the regular season. ACU would win as well, while Southern Utah lost in St. George, which places the Lancers one game ahead of the Wildcats and two games ahead of the Thunderbirds. The Lancers will face both ACU and SUU next week, with seeding and the regular season title on the line.
It was a slow offensive start for both teams in the first half, as the two defenses played very methodically and forced one another into tough, contested looks on a routine basis. The Lancers would not trail in the first half of action, but the Texans never let the game get out of hand. Tarleton State never trailed by more than five points over the opening 20 minutes of action, and that's the number they would trail heading into the locker room, with CBU leading 30-25.
The Lancers forced Tarleton State to shoot just 25% from the floor in the first half while shooting 41% themselves to hold the early lead. The scoring was spread out in the first half, with Lauren Olsen and Grace Schmidt leading the way early with eight points apiece.
CBU finally started to break away from the Texans in the back half of the third period as they would execute a 6-0 run in the final two minutes of the frame to take their largest lead of the game up until that point at 47-41. The two teams would trade baskets in the ensuing possessions, but the Lancers would ultimately take that six-point lead into the fourth quarter. CBU would compound that lead with two quick buckets to begin the fourth quarter to make the lead balloon to double digits and force Tarleton to burn a quick timeout.
After the timeout, the Texans would execute a 9-1 run to cut the lead to two points with 5:22 to play. Olsen would break up the Tarleton momentum with an and-one opportunity before the Texans would answer back with a quick rim attack from Gia Adams. The Lancers would convert two critical triples from Shawnee Nordstrom and Olsen over the final four minutes to keep the game out of reach. The Texans would keep the pressure on the Lancers, but they would run out of time as CBU would take the victory 76-67 at the EECU Center.
Despite the close battle, the Lancers would never trail in the ball game and would outshoot the Texans 47% to 35% from the floor for the critical win. CBU would get several key contributions from their starters, including 16 points apiece from Olsen, Nordstrom, and Grace Schmidt. Filipa Barros would add another double-double to her resume with 13 points and ten rebounds to pair with three steals. Sofia Alonso had a solid day off the bench as well with eight points, five rebounds, and two assists in 26 minutes.
NEXT: The Lancers will finalize their final regular-season road trip on Thursday, March 5, against Abilene Christian at Moody Coliseum.
