SAN DIEGO, CA--- The California Baptist University track team ventured south to compete in its second outdoor competition of the year by running at the Aztec Coastal Classic on Friday evening.
The Lancers would only compete in the Distance Carnival portion of the competition as they would run in the 800, 1500, Steeplechase, and 5K's.
The 800's were up first on the evening as the men kicked off the day. Freshmen Joshua Griffin and Joshua Mitchell would be the Lancers' lone competitors in the race, finishing 4th and 6th, respectively. Next up was the women's 1500m, with eight Lancers competing across three heats. In the fastest heat, the Lancers were well-represented, with four finishers in the top ten. Helena Mees led the group in third with a time of 4:25.58, while her teammates Sarah Schiffman and Isalys Huet would come in right behind her in fourth and fifth. Mahaut Cooren would be the final Lancer in the top ten with a time of 4:31.39.
The men's 1500m was also a Lancer-dominated field, with four of the five fastest times in the competition. Gabriel Guzman, who ran unattached, would record the fastest time at 3:46.43 while Manuel Rojas was the fastest official Lancer at 3:46.52. Nicolai Martino and Lorenzo Riba would both finish in the top five, while Kevin Sandoval and Jude Enriquez would both finish just outside the top ten at 11th and 12th, respectively.
Next up would be the steeplechase, where just one Lancer would compete, with Ernesto Ruiz running on the men's side. Ruiz would win the race with a time of 8:51.23. The time is just two seconds off of his personal best that he set at the Franson Invite last season.
The night would conclude with 5K's as both the men and women would have runners. The Lancers would finish 1-2 in the race with Pedro Marin crossing the line first as an unattached runner. Victor Rosas would be the next Lancer across the line in second with a time of 13:56.19, while Roberto Castro Lara would finish in the top ten with a time of 14:10.37. On the women's side, Eleonara Visnevskyte and Ana Mees would be CBU's top finishers, placing 5th and 6th, respectively.
NEXT: The Lancers will compete in the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival hosted by UCLA on March 27.
