LAS VEGAS, NV --- For the third time in the last four years, California Baptist is bound for the WAC Championship Game. Backed by prolific shooting performances by guards Filipa Barros and Shawnee Nordstrom, the Lancers sprinted past Tarleton State, 77-60, to extend CBU's final WAC Tournament run.
Barros and Nordstrom combined for 39 of CBU's 77 points, shooting a combined 15-of-26 from the field.
"If I'm going to go out there and choose five to play, I'm definitely taking these two with me," said head coach Jarrod Olson on Barros and Nordstrom.
Olson added on his team building philosophy, "I just try to get people I would want to play with in pickup basketball. I want people who are going to be competitive, people who are going to go for it, people who are going to share the ball, that will shoot it when they're open."
Baros was electric in the opening half, nearly recording a double-double in the first 20 minutes of play. At the break, Barros paired 13 points with nine rebounds and four assists. She would end the night with a team-high 13 boards and five assists.
She finished the night with 21 points. Nordstrom dropped 18.
"I was thinking that the last time I played here was in my freshman year," said Barros, who did not play in last season's WAC Tournament. "It's been a while, so I just came with everything. I really wanted to win, so I was going to do whatever it took to win."
Grace Schmidt also aided CBU's attack on the glass with ten boards. Schmidt dished out five assists to pair with her five points. Sofia Alonso ended the night with nine points.
The Lancers led for all but 1:17 of Friday's semifinal win, extending their lead as high as 20 early in the fourth quarter.
CBU put it on Tarleton early, taking a 12-4 lead into the first media timeout. The lead was set up by 3-pointers from Barros and Olson, sending the Lancers into the stoppage on a 9-0 run. The Lancers also posted a 7-0 charge late in the period to take a commanding 22-8 lead into the second quarter.
Tarleton climbed back in the second quarter, outscoring the Lancers by three to send the game into the intermission with CBU leading 41-30.
The Lancers bounced back in the third, thanks to an 8-0 A run that was capped off by a Nordstrom three. Nordstrom kept the momentum going late in the third when she sank a jumper before time expired to give the Lancers a 19-point edge entering the fourth.
CBU, the regular season champion of the WAC, improves to 22-10 with Friday's win. Their next opponent is to be determined, as the Lancers will face either UT Arlington or Abilene Christian in Saturday's championship game.
Saturday's game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. and will air live on ESPNU.
