LAS VEGAS, NV--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team will compete in its third WAC Championship game in four years on Saturday afternoon, facing the #2 seed Abilene Christian University Wildcats.
CBU and ACU have been on a championship collision course all season, as they have been the two highest-ranked teams in the NET rankings and the conference standings. The Lancers enter the matchup 22-10 this season and finished as the conference Regular Season Champions for the third time in program history.
The Abilene Christian Wildcats, like the Lancers, dominated their semifinal matchup with a 70-50 victory over the #6 UT Arlington Mavericks to advance to the Championship. Peyton Hull, the WAC Player of the Year, led the way for ACU with 21 points.
During the regular season, CBU was 2-1 against the Wildcats, winning both road matchups in close games, while ACU defeated the Lancers in Riverside in early January by a final score of 70-58. In the most recent matchup, the Lancers won in an overtime thriller at Moody Coliseum, 76-69, to secure the Regular Season Championship and one of the double byes in the tournament. Filipa Barros came up clutch in the victory with 26 points, which included 11 of CBU's 13 points in the overtime period, to guide the Lancers to victory. The Lancers currently hold a 6-3 all-time record against ACU, and it will be the first-ever meeting between the two heavyweights in the WAC Tournament.
ACU and CBU accounted for all of the major regular-season awards in the WAC, with ACU's Peyton Hull winning the Player of the Year, while CBU took home the Coach, Freshman, Defensive, and 6th Player of the Year awards. The Lancers defeated #5 Tarleton State in the semifinals in dominant fashion, 77-60, to earn their 8th WAC Tournament victory in program history.
