CEDAR CITY, UT --- The Lancers got the job done in Cedar City on Saturday night, taking down Southern Utah to wrap up the regular season. But needing a win and some help down the road in St. George, CBU had to stick around and watch their WAC counterparts wrap up their game, as the postseason picture is now set in stone.
CBU came into the night needing two things to clinch a share of the WAC regular season championship: a win, and a Utah Valley loss. After CBU took care of business in an 82-75 victory, the team stuck around and watched as Utah Valley and Utah Tech battled into double overtime. In the end, a Utah Tech 3-pointer at the horn to tie the game missed, clinching an outright WAC regular season championship for the Wolverines.
The Lancers were guaranteed the two-seed in the WAC Tournament no matter the outcome of Saturday's action.
For the third game in a row, CBU never trailed, as this time a Jonathan Griman bucket 1:15 into the contest put CBU on the board. Southern Utah quickly leveled the score, but the Lancers then responded to retake the lead and never relinquish the advantage. CBU led for 38:24 of Saturday's action.
The Lancers were red-hot out of the gate as they connected on 61 percent from the field in the opening half. CBU sank 19 first half field goals, turning that into 45 points and a 13-point lead at the break.
Saturday's lead reached as high as 20 with 7:25 remaining in the opening half.
But Southern Utah would not go away quietly, battling back in the second half to eventually claw within two. The Lancers answered the SUU surge with back-to-back Dominique Daniels Jr. baskets, pushing the lead to six.
The lead jumped up to nine in the final ten seconds, putting a bow on a fourth consecutive CBU win.
Daniels Jr. led the Lancers with 32 points in his final regular season game. He finished 12-of-20 from the field and sank 7-of-11 at the line.
Two other seniors, Martel Williams and Jayden Jackson, finished their final regular season games with 14 points. Williams was one rebound shy of a double-double. Griman led the team with ten boards.
With the regular season now at its closing point, focus shifts to the WAC Tournament next week in Las Vegas. The Lancers will open their postseason run on Friday, as they have earned a bye into the semifinals. CBU's semifinal game is slated for 8:30 p.m. from the Orleans Arena.
