
Multiple Lancers Set 5K PR's on Day 2 of the Bryan Clay Invitational

AZUSA, CA--- The California Baptist University track team returned to Franson Field on Friday as they would compete in a large lineup of 5K's at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
The 5K madness kicked off early in the day with a handful of Lancers running in the morning in the Open section of the 5K's. Abby Biber finished top 25 in her heat with a time of 17:45.99 while three Lancers competed in the 800m event to complete the morning session.
The majority of the squad would compete on the evening slate, beginning with Sophia Clarkson making her 5K debut. Clarkson finished 22nd in her heat with a time of 17:34.66. Ceyda Pinar would set a new personal best in the event in the next heat, finishing 7th in 16:40.66 and placing her in the top 30 in the event on the evening. Ana Mees joined her in the heat and placed 25th, finishing in the top 100 overall. Isalys Huet would have the best run of the section in heat #3, securing the 10th-best time of the event at 16:31.06 in her 5K debut.
On the men's side of the Open A Section, true freshman Nicolai Martino would have a terrific showing with a time of 14:09.28, which placed him 8th in his heat and 34th overall. Jude DeVries had the best overall time for the Lancers in the section at 14:02.20, which would be a new personal best and would give him a top 20 time in the event.
As the evening came to an end, the Lancers would have nine more 5K runners spread out through the final five invite sections, beginning with Victor Rosas, Ernesto Ruiz, and Gabriel Guzman kicking off the late-night competition. Rosas led the small Lancer contingent in 13th place with a time of 13:51.51, marking a new personal best that he set earlier this season at the Aztec Coastal Classic. Ruiz finished not too far behind in 19th place with a sub-14-minute time at 13:58.31. For the women, Mahaut Cooren and Helena Mees kicked off the session with incredible performances. Cooren would set a new personal best time by nearly going under 16 minutes at 16:02.58, while Mees would make her return to the track after missing the past several weeks with a knee injury with a time of 16:19.07.
Sarah Schiffman and Ava Dyck would close out the night for the Lancers with phenomenal runs as well, with Schiffman nearly winning the heat with a time of 16:19.62 and Dyck submitting a solid time of 16:24.96 to finish in 11th in the heat. The time for Schiffman is a new personal best for the Ole Miss transfer, besting her previous time by a second.
NEXT: The Lancers will close out the Bryan Clay Invitational on Saturday with the majority of the team competing in the 1500's.
