LAS CRUCES, NM--- The California Baptist University volleyball team dropped the second of a back-to-back opening weekend, falling in straight sets to the New Mexico State Aggies in Las Cruces.
The Lancers found themselves in an early hole in the opening set as the Aggies, spurred on by their home crowd, jumped out to an early 5-1 advantage. CBU stayed patient and slowly chipped away at the New Mexico State lead and would eventually tie and take the lead at 19-18 later in the frame. The Aggies countered with two quick points, which were one-upped by a 3-0 Lancer run to make it 22-20. NM State would go on a 3-0 run that led to their set win in extra points, with a final score of 26-24.
In the second set, the Lancers held an early advantage, leading by as many as four points. A late 3-0 run by the Aggies, led by solid blocking, would get the home crowd back into the match and led to the Aggies mounting a comeback to steal the second set 25-23, taking a commanding 2-0 lead over CBU. The Aggies would dominate the third and what proved to be the final set, punctuated by a 10-3 run to close the set and capture the 3-0 victory.
Despite the loss, Nalanie Neal posted a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs to lead the Lancers in both departments. Bella Breuer was solid in the middle with eight kills and three blocks, while Avery Barber recorded 26 more assists.
NEXT: The Lancers will hit the road next weekend to Corvallis, Oregon, to compete in the Asics Invitational hosted by Oregon State.
