CBU Drops Friday Night Game to Sacred Heart

RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University volleyball team suffered a Friday night setback as they dropped a four-set match to the visiting Sacred Heart Pioneers on day two of The Joust.
The Lancers fall to 2-5 on the season, while the Pioneers finish 2-1 in the tournament and 5-4 overall.
The Pioneers struck first in the match as they would open up an early sizable lead over the Lancers and never relinquish it. Sacred Heart would hold off a late CBU push, winning the frame 25-19. CBU fell further behind the eight ball in the second set as they quickly saw their five-point lead disappear. Sacred Heart would finish the set on a 7-2 run that would win them the period 25-21 and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the game.
CBU responded in a big way in the third set as they would quickly build an impressive 11-2 lead. The Pioneers were never able to recover from the early deficit, and the Lancers would rattle off several more sizable scoring runs that resulted in a 25-14 victory in the third set to force a fourth frame. The Pioneers bounced back quickly to start the fourth period as they got out to an early 5-1 lead, but CBU would climb back in slowly but surely and eventually tie the match at 15 apiece. The Lancers would take a two-point lead at 23-21, but the Pioneers would go on a critical 3-0 run that would cause Trevor Johnson to burn his final timeout. CBU would force extra points off an Audrey Heiring kill, but the Pioneers closed the game on another 3-0 to close the match 27-25.
Despite the loss, the Lancers received good news in the fact that Maddie Brown and Jana Cetkovic would make their season debuts. Brown would register 14 assists off the bench and would add six digs. Cetkovic scored her first kill as a Lancer and would also add a block to her stat sheet. Heiring led the way with 11 kills and made it a double-double with ten digs, which also led the team. As a unit, the Lancers were solid on the blocks with a season best 17, led by Daria Chekhovskikh and Bella Breuer, who had 4.5 apiece.
NEXT: The Lancers will conclude the Joust Tournament tomorrow morning as they take on the Idaho Vandals at 11 AM at Van Dyne Gym.
