CBU Sweeps Texas Southern in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, CA--- The California Baptist University volleyball team got itself back in the win column on Friday afternoon as it swept Texas Southern at the USF Challenge.
The sweep is the first win in straight sets for the Lancers this season and brings their early record to 3-7.
The Lancers shook off the early-game rust that has plagued them this season and came out strong against the Tigers. Led by Anaiya Campbell with six kills in the first frame, the Lancers would lead by double digits and eventually closed out the period 25-17 for the 1-0 lead. The Tigers started on a 4-0 run in the second set, and they would lead by as many as seven points at 16-10. CBU would execute an impressive 11-3 run, netting them the lead at 20-19. The Lancers would finish the comeback with another late scoring run that would give them a 25-21 victory and the commanding 2-0 lead.
In the third period, the Lancers did not face much resistance from the Tigers as they would never surrender the lead in the frame and would go on to pull off the sweep by a final set score of 25-19.
Eleftheria Baxa would lead the way with 15 kills on 25 attacks for a career best .560 hitting percentage (min. 10 Kills). Emery DeJong secured double-digit kills for the third time since her return with 10 kills, while Campbell continued her great tournament with eight kills. Maria Contrerera made the most of her extended playing time with two kills, nine assists, and 1.5 blocks while Avery Barber paced the offense with 22 assists.
NEXT: The Lancers will finish out the USF Challenge tomorrow afternoon as they face the host, the San Francisco Dons, at 12 PM.
