With the score tied at 10-10, the Pomona-Pitzer utility forced a steal in the middle of the pool and waltzed up and beat Lancer goalie Jon Miller, who made 12 saves and had squelched a 1-v-1 opportunity in the waning minutes of regulation.
“The guys played really well this weekend,” said assistant coach Mike Moreno. “It was a good chance to start the season at home and get some guys some time as well. It would've been better to win that last game, but those games where it's your third of the day are always difficult, and Pomona-Pitzer was tough. I think we went into the box too many times and some of the resulting ejections hurt us down the road.”
The loss drops California Baptist, ranked No. 20 in the country, to 12-6. Was the second year in a row that the Lancers fell to Pomona Pitzer, who was previously winless in 5 tries. The Lancers finish out with a 3-1 record in the Lancer Invitational, including 2 wins today.
With the score, 9-8, in favor of the Sagehens, Chris Morgan tossed in the game-tying score with 6:41 on the clock and then un-tied the game with just 3:22 remaining. David Mock, who finished with a pair of goals, tied the score at 10-10 and sent the game to overtime with 1:20 on the fourth-quarter clock.
The Lancers trailed, 4-2, in the second quarter after Michael Mueting scored less than 30 seconds into the period, but goals by Morgan and Aaron Abellano within a minute of each other knotted the score at 4-4. After Pomona-Pitzer took the lead on a Tim Brown goal, Josh Harris netted a pair of unanswered goals to make it 6-5 at the half.

Abellano and Looy each scored a trio of goals as California Baptist beat Occidental, 12-10, in its first game of the day. The Lancers rattled off 21 shots to the Tigers' 16, but almost let a late 6-point lead dwindle away.
In the first half, Looy netted a trio of goals and Abellano scored a pair as the Lancers took a 7-3 lead into the break. The Tigers were not going to go down so easy, however, as they ripped off 6 fourth-quarter goals to give the Lancers a scare, at 12-10.
