Tonight, NCAA Division I No. 2-ranked BYU put up 13 blocks, including back-to-back rejections at a crucial point in the opening game to lift the Cougars to a 3-0 (30-26, 30-18, 30-25) win over the Lancers Friday night in Provo, Utah.
It was the first of back-to-back matches between the 2 teams with the rematch coming Saturday night. The Lancers fall to 0-2 with the loss after dropping a 4-game decision against No. 1 UC Irvine Wednesday in
Urs Gunthor led the Lancers with 8 kills and hit .462 (
The Lancers led the entire opening game, keeping the Cougars on their heels. However, with the game tied at 26-26, BYU took its first lead of the match with back-to-back blocks by Robby Stowell and Trent Sorenson to take a 28-26 lead. Two points later, Sorenson ended the game with a block.
That opening game win gave all the momentum to the Cougars, who rolled to an 11-4 lead in the second game and never looked back. Again, in the third game, BYU jetted out to an early lead and held a comfortable cushion until the Lancers got within 26-23 to make it interesting. However, the Cougars scored 4 of the final 6 points for the win.
Shamsu Awudu and Romain Vetter each had 6 kills apiece, while Awudu finished with a team-leading 5 blocks.
