The NAIA's 3-time defending champion Lancers tie last year's school record by dropping their fourth match in a row to start a season, but, like the 0-4 start last year, each of California Baptist's opponents have been NCAA Division I top-5 programs.
No. 5-ranked Pepperdine hit .581 (23-5-31) in the opening set, as it waltzed to a 30-27, 30-22, 30-25 victory over the Lancers. California Baptist followed up a .480 (14-2-25) effort in game one with a paltry .182 (10-6-22) showing in the second set.
Last year's NAIA/Tachikara NAIA National Invitational MVP Shamsu Awudu slammed 18 kills against just 3 errors on 27 attempts, but no other Lancer reached double digits for the match.
Pepperdine's Paul Carroll was nearly unstoppable, registering 21 kills and just 2 errors on 26 swings (.731). John Parfitt hit .500 (11-3-16) for the night.
