RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? California Baptist answered the bell Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Concordia inside of Van Dyne Gymnasium. Just three days removed from a 3-0 loss to Fresno Pacific, the second-ranked Lancers (18-3, 11-2) shook the dust off and blanked the third-ranked Eagles (19-3, 10-3).
“I'm glad we came out and played as well as we did tonight after we struggled against Fresno (Pacific),” said CBU head coach Ryan McGuyre. “We've been working real hard all week. We had to find a way to get Vera (Willis) back to the way she was hitting and get the ball to (Shi) Fei.”
Verania Willis led the way with 22 kills while Fei had 15 kills and Colleen Sweeney had 11. Fei was also two digs shy of a double-double with eight while hitting .314 (15-4-35). Kayla Van Duyn dished out 48 assists to round out the offense. Katrina Clark recorded a match-high 22 digs while Yudelka Bonilla had 16 digs. Rachel Gowen also had three blocks.
“We were a little sick tonight, but we still came out and played well,” said McGuyre. “Vera got back on track tonight, but I thought Fei was the difference. She played so well tonight.”
CBU jumped out to a 1-0 match lead after Shi Fei ripped a kill and the Lancers took advantage of an Ashley Robbins error to take the opening game 32-30. CBU led 20-15, but Concordia began to close the gap and eventually took the lead at 24-23. The Eagles took their last lead at 28-27 before Willis tied the game with a kill. Concordia tied the game at 29 and 30 before the Lancers put the game away.
In game two, CBU broke a 10-10 tie with a 4-0 run and then took a 27-20 lead late in the game. The Lancers withstood a late charge from the Eagles to take a 2-0 lead.
CBU closed out the match hitting .462 (21-3-39) in the final game. Sweeney was perfect in game three hitting 1.000 with seven kills on seven attempts.
CBU will now travel to Fullerton, Calif., to take on Hope International, Saturday at 7 p.m.
