FULLERTON, Calif. ? Shi Fei hit 18 kills while hitting .471 (18-2-34) as the sophomore from Nanjing, China led California Baptist to a 3-0 win over Hope International, Saturday. The Lancers (19-3, 12-2 GSAC) hit .367 (58-14-120) as CBU had no problems disposing of the Royals (6-13, 12-11 GSAC).
Verania Willis also had 16 kills hitting .481 (16-2-27) and had seven digs. Kayla Van Duyn and Caitlin Parker split setting duties as Van Duyn had 31 assists while Parker had 19. Katrina Clark had a match-high 18 digs while Rachel Gowen had a match-high three blocks.
“I felt like the first couple of games we were right on target,” said CBU assistant coach Trevor Johnson. “Fei was unstoppable and when Vera hits like that, it's always good for us. Kayla and Caitlin both set extremely well. We were able to get some girls into the game that don't normally play, and they played very well too.”
In the opening game HIU got within three at 24-21, but the Lancers closed with a 6-1 run to take a 1-0 lead. It was more of the same in game two as the Lancers kept Royals at bay. Hope looked to have a little life late in the third game leading 24-22, but the Lancers went on an 8-1 run to close the game and the match. Fei had two kills in that run.
“This week we had been working on our transition game going from getting a good dig to setting up for an attack,” said Johnson. “We did a great job digging tonight and that was a huge part in setting up the good transitions we had tonight.”
CBU returns back to Van Dyne Gym for a two-game homestand when it hosts Azusa Pacific, Thursday at 7 p.m. and then hosts Westmont at 3 p.m., Saturday.
