RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? What was billed as the possible game of the week, turned out to be a rout by California Baptist as it defeated Biola 3-0 (30-28, 30-20, 30-21). The Lancers (16-2, 9-1 GSAC) got another double-double from Yudelka Bonilla who got 17 kills and 20 digs to lead CBU over the Eagles (15-3, 7-3 GSAC).
“It was good to get it done in three,” said CBU head coach Ryan McGuyre. “We got a little better as the game went on. I think Biola will be better the next time around if they can get one of their players back who was injured. We have struggled to find our identity since Angela has been gone, but we have started to find a rhythm.”
Verania Willis led the Lancers with a match-high 18 kills. Shi Fei also was in double figure kills with 11 and picked up four blocks. Kayla Van Duyn had 49 assists and 10 digs while Katrina Clark recorded 16 digs. Rachel Gowen recorded four blocks while Colleen Sweeney blocked three.
“I thought Kat settled down after game one and made some great digs and some good passes on tough serves,” said McGuyre. “Fei is back on track so I have really enjoyed the way she has played. We were just sharper tonight. It needs to get to the point where we are taking good rips or making them earn digs and we started to do that in the second and third games.”
The first game of the match looked like the fans in Van Dyne Gymnasium might have to settle in for a five-game match. The lead changed 14 times, but CBU came out on top. The Lancers fell behind 7-3 early, but that was the most they trailed by as they continued to work their way to an opening win.
The Lancers put the Eagles in an early hole in the second game after jumping out to a 9-1 lead. Biola never recovered falling behind 2-0 in the match, but looked like it might be back in the match when it closed the gap in game three to 16-15. CBU however, put the match away with a 7-0 run to take a 26-17 lead. In that run Willis and Fei both had two kills.
CBU will now host The Master's, a team that the Lancers beat 3-0, Sept. 4.
