FRESNO, Calif. ? No. 1 Fresno Pacific showed why they belonged atop the NAIA rankings as No. 2 California Baptist fell 3-0 (30-28, 30-26, 30-19) to the Sunbirds Saturday night. The Lancers (17-3, 10-2 GSAC) came out firing, but couldn't hold off the Sunbirds (21-0, 12-0 GSAC) and played catch up from the end of the opening game on. The loss end's a 10-game winning streak for CBU, a streak that started after FPU knocked off the Lancers in Riverside, Calif., Sept. 8.
Yudelka Bonilla and Shi Fei led the Lancers both with double-doubles. Bonilla had 11 kills and 16 digs while Fei had 10 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Colleen Sweeney hit .438 (8-1-16). Kayla Van Duyn had 29 assists while Katrina Clark had a team-high 17 digs.
Sweeney and Rachel Gowen looked be giving CBU a head start with a pair of kills in game one as CBU climbed out to a 4-1 lead and continued to push the lead to 18-10. The Lancers led 24-18 after another Sweeney kill, but that seemed to be the kill that awoke the Sunbirds. FPU went on a 7-1 run to tie the game at 25 and then added two more to take a 27-25 lead. That was all the Sunbirds needed to take the opening game.
FPU carried the momentum from game one well into game two to take a 17-6 lead. Fresno was just two points away from taking a 2-0 lead before the Lancers ripped off 11 straight points to cut the deficit to 28-25. It was too little too late for CBU though. FPU closed out the game to take the 2-0 match lead.
Both teams traded blows to open the third game until FPU broke an 8-8 tie and went on a 11-1 run to take a 19-9 lead. The Sunbirds cruised from there winning 30-19.
The Lancers return to Van Dyne Gymnasium Tuesday to take on No. 3 Concordia at 7 p.m.
