RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? California Baptist continues to take care of business with another shutout victory as it defeated Vanguard 3-0 (30-17, 30-24, 30-15) in the opening round of the NAIA Region II Tournament. The Lancers (26-3) have won nine straight matches and have won 27 of 28 games played in those matches. The Lions (10-16) end their season with the loss to CBU.
Verania Willis and Yudelka Bonilla combined for a pair of double-doubles. Willis ripped a match-high 22 kills and had 15 digs and Bonilla recorded 12 kills and 14 digs. Shi Fei notched 15 kills and seven digs. Kayla Van-Duyn dished out a match-high 55 assists. Katrina Clark recorded a match-high 20 digs while Willis and Colleen Sweeney both picked up three blocks.
Bonilla had six kills and six digs in the opening game and hit .545 as CBU was well on its way to picking up the win. The Lions led early twice at 4-3 and 5-4, but CBU took the lead at 6-5 and never looked back. Both Willis and Fei had seven kills in the second game as the Lancers battled from behind for the majority of the game. CBU trailed 22-20, but went on a 7-1 run to hold a 27-23 advantage and closed the game out from there. The Lancers out scored the Lions 10-2 down the stretch.
The Lancers closed out the match in convincing fashion with a 12-3 run after holding an 18-12 advantage in the game three.
California Baptist will now head to Fresno, Calif., for the semifinal round of the Region II Tournament. The Lancers will play No. 2 Concordia, Friday at 4 p.m.
