COLUMBIA, Mo. ? A quarterfinal match awaits California Baptist after the Lancers won their third straight match in pool play with a 3-0 (30-23, 30-16, 30-19) victory over No. 9 Lewis-Clark, Thursday at Stephens College. The Lancers (30-4) got a match-high 23 digs from Katrina Clark which helped move CBU into the elimination round. The Warriors (26-8) saw their season come to a close as it finished pool play at 1-2.
Shi Fei hit .462 (13-1-26) and was over a .400 clip for the second straight match. Verania Willis had a match-high 18 kills and 15 digs for a double-double. Yudelka Bonilla also notched a double-double as she ripped 11 kills and dug out 12 attacks. Kayla Van Duyn had her second straight match with at least 50 assists as she dished out 50. The Lancers hit .314 (54-17-118) and had 68 digs and five blocks.
CBU battled through the first half of the opening game and took the lead for good after the fifth and final tie of the game at 11-11 on a Willis kill. LCSC got within one at 16-15, but that was as close as they came. CBU kicked into gear and pulled away from that point to take game one.
The Warriors came out firing in the second game, but the Lancers used a 6-0 run behind the service of Bonilla to jump out to an 11-7 lead. Just the like the first game, LCSC got within one (13-12), but watched CBU close out the game on a 17-4 run to take a 2-0 lead.
The final game mirrored the first two as the Warriors kept it close early at 13-12, but CBU proved to be too strong down the stretch as it ran away with a 17-7 run to close out the match.
The Lancers will now play the winner of Northwestern and its to-be determined opponent tomorrow at 6 p.m. inside the Southwell Complex at Columbia College. The Lancers match will be televised live on naia.cstv.com and each additional match to follow will also be televised.
