SANTA BARBARA, Calif. ? Verania Willis hit a blistering .667 clip and led California Baptist with 25 kills as CBU defeated Westmont 3-0 (30-27, 30-22, 30-26) Tuesday in Golden State Athletic Conference action. The Lancers (11-2, 4-1) hit .407 overall including .457 in the final game of the match with just one error. The Warriors (7-7, 0-5) were held to a .279 clip, but suffered just an eight-point loss in their worst game.
Yudelka Bonilla hit 16 kills while Kayla Van Duyn recorded 47 assists. Mical Bell and Katrina Clark each had a pair of aces.
“We adjusted after Rachel (Gowen) got hurt during warm ups,” said McGuyre. “We went with a different lineup and I thought we did a nice job offensively. Mical came in and served well and got us going with a few runs. Vera was also a little bit fresher tonight.”
The Lancers fell behind early in game one trailing as much as six (20-14) before they tied the game at 24. Bonilla capped off a 7-1 run with a kill to give CBU a 28-24 lead that it never relinquished. The Lancers never trailed in game two and led by as much at 12 (27-15) before grabbing the eight-point win and taking a 2-0 match lead.
CBU used a 4-0 run to break a 6-6 tie in game three, but could never take more than a six-point lead. The Lancers took advantage of 27 total errors as CBU won its third straight GSAC road game and its fourth straight overall.
CBU will travel to Azusa Pacific to take on the 10th ranked Cougars Thursday at 7 p.m.
