RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Concordia's Mike Mirzadeh scored his first goal of the season eight minutes into overtime Saturday to help the NAIA's No. 1-ranked Concordia escape with a 1-0 victory over California Baptist in both teams' GSAC opener.
The win keeps the two-time defending GSAC champion Eagles unbeaten as they improve to 7-0-0 overall, 1-0-0 (3 points) GSAC. The Lancers fall to 4-3-1, 0-1-0 (0 points).
For more than 90 minutes it appeared as if the Lancers would at least earn and happily settle for a scoreless draw to steal a point from the top-ranked Eagles. In a game played in steady rain for the majority of the time, neither team was able to generate many chances. In fact, the teams combined for just three shots on goal.
In the extra time, however, the Eagles were awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. After a scramble ensued in front of Lancer keeper Adam Kramer, Mirzadeh found himself with the ball, he took a couple of touches and created a one-on-one opportunity, leaving Kramer with no chance. Mirzadeh, a defender, put away the game-winner.
The Lancers had a golden opportunity early in the game, but Shane Shelton's low rip in the 23rd minute banged off the post and was cleared from danger. The teams' combined for 24 shots, 12 apiece.
Both Kramer and Mike Borst made one save each.
