PROVO, Utah ? Donald Baliaba had a match-high 26 kills and hit .400 (26-8-45) as California Baptist fell to NCAA Division I No. 1 BYU 3-1 (30-25, 23-30, 30-19, 30-25).
The Lancers (2-2) hit .294 (60-25-119) as a team, but through two games played CBU was tied with the Cougars (6-0) at 1-1.
After falling in the opening game, the Lancers rebounded to take game two behind Yukai Sun. CBU broke a 13-13 tie in game two with a 3-0 run. The Lancers pushed the lead to 19-15, and held a 26-21 lead late in the game. The Cougars closed the gap to 27-23 before kills by Baliaba and Romain Vetter and a block by Adiel Tiedjop helped tie the game at one.
The Lancers hit .692 (19-1-26) in game two, but didn't over .200 in the next two games.
Sun was the only other Lancer who had double-figure kills with 12. Eric Plunkett had a match-high 49 assists. Corey Spence led the defense with 10 digs while Adam Church and Romain Vetter each had three blocks.
The Lancers will have a second chance to knock off the nation's No. 1 again when the Cougars host CBU again, Saturday, at 6 p.m. (PST).
