FRESNO, Calif. --- The NAIA's No. 12-ranked Fresno Pacific scored three second half goals to hand California Baptist University a disheartening 3-0 GSAC loss Saturday afternoon in Fresno.
The loss drops the Lancers to 6-5-2 overall, 2-3-1 (7 points) GSAC, while the Sunbirds improve to 8-3-1, 4-2-1 (13 points).
The Lancers had their chances early, out-shooting the Sunbirds, 9-6, in the first 45 minutes, but they couldn't convert. They hit the crossbar twice, and FPU keeper Brandon Cave made his lone first half save, all in a three minute span.
CBU out-shot the Sunbirds, 19-16, in the game, but it was the Sunbirds that finished their chances in the second half. Daniel Spieth scored all three goals in a 28-minute span in the second half.
Speith's first goal of the game came in the 59th minute when he volleyed a pass from Andres Rodriguez past CBU keeper Jeff Redinger. He scored again in the 76th minute and then put the game on ice with his ninth goal of the season in the 87th minute. Cave made five saves in recording his school-record 22nd career shutout.
"Obviously, we're disappointed today," said CBU Head Coach Ryan Jorden. "We were absolutely fantastic in the first 25 minutes but couldn't finish our chances. We created them but couldn't hit the target. In this game, you have to take care of your chances early otherwise good teams will punish you, and we got punished today."
