RIVERSIDE, Calif. ? Norbert Karoly almost played the hero for the third straight game in a row, but a goal scored with four second left was called back. The call gave Golden West College a 9-8 victory over No. 18 California Baptist in overtime.
In just their second loss at home of the year, the Lancers (25-11) could only convert on two of their 14 6-on-5 opportunities. California Baptist led 8-7 midway through the fourth quarter after Aaron Steiger scored his fourth goal of the game on a 6-on-5.
The Rustlers took advantage of a late exclusion called on Karoly with 27 seconds left to play and scored the 6-on-5 with 12 ticks left.
Emilio Vieira, who scored a goal in every period for GWC, put the game away with 49 seconds left in the opening period of overtime to go up 9-8. The Lancers looked to have tied the game with four seconds left, but Karoly's goal was negated after the official said he had to shoot immediately, and not pump fake, after a minor foul was called outside five meters.
Despite falling to Golden West, Steiger was able to break the school's single-season scoring record in the second period. His first goal of the day tied him with Ante Kunac and his older brother Ryan with 95 goals. Then with 4:49 left in the second, Steiger netted his 96th goal of the season to put him atop the charts.
That second goal gave the Lancers their biggest lead of the game at 5-2, but the Rustlers pulled within one, at 5-4, at the half.
Steiger scored his third goal of the game early in the third to give CBU a 6-4 lead. After a GWC goal made it 6-5, Chris Morgan put the Lancer back up by two at 7-5 with 39 seconds left in the third. The Rustlers answered again with just three seconds left in the third to make it 7-6. GWC made it 7-7 with 4:57 left before Steiger's fourth goal.
Both GWC's keepers combined for 13 saves while Zach Bowman posted 11.
The Lancers now just have one more game left on the regular season schedule as they travel to Chapman, Saturday, for a 4 p.m. game. The Panthers scored an upset over the Lancers Oct. 3 at the Claremont Convergence.
