CBU Sweeps Day 2 of the Bruno Classic for 3-1 Opening Weekend

CAMBRIDGE, MASS--- The Lancers swept day two of the Bruno Classic on Saturday afternoon as they would defeat #17 Harvard in its home pool and dominate the MIT Engineers for the 3-1 opening weekend result.
GAME 1 at HARVARD:
The opening game of Day Two of the Bruno Classic served as the season opener for the host Harvard Crimson, as the Lancers competed in their match of the weekend. The Crimson came out with tons of momentum, netting three quick goals and drawing numerous exclusions against the Lancers. Coach Kevin Rosa would circle his squad up to regain composure, and it was effective, with the Lancers scoring four unanswered goals from the stoppage to take the lead at the tail end of the first period.
CBU would control the majority of the second period as they kept Harvard at bay and would take a 10-7 lead into the halftime break. The Lancers maintained their lead for most of the second half, but the Crimson would not go away and rattled off a big rally in the fourth period that put them back in front with under four minutes to play. CBU would respond again with Rafa Martinez tying the match at 15 apiece with 2:52 on a power-play opportunity.
Harvard would scramble on the next ensuing possessions, but could not find any angles against the stingy Lancer defense. CBU would then set up a perfect scoring opportunity with Andrea Nuzzo finding Paulo Hernandez with 2:01 to go, which would hold up as the game-winning goal as the Lancers won the thriller 16-15 over the #17 Harvard Crimson in their home pool.
Whitley Beamon was phenomenal with four goals and three assists for the Lancers, while Martinez would also post a hat trick with a trio of goals from his center position. Tanner McCreary would turn away nine Crimson shots in the cage as CBU improved to 2-1 on the weekend.
GAME 2 vs MIT:
The Lancers and Engineers traded blows in the first period with both offenses humming along at a high level. CBU would manage to find the back of the net seven times through eight minutes while MIT kept pace with five goals. CBU's defense tightened in the second period as they would allow just one goal in the frame, as they put three more on the board for the modest 10-6 halftime advantage.
CBU blew the game open in the third period, as they allowed no goals for the opening 13 minutes of the second half and extended the lead into double digits. MIT would finally end the drought at the 3:07 mark of the fourth period, but the damage was far too severe for any comeback attempt, and the Lancers would cruise their way to a dominating 21-7 victory at Blodgett Pool.
It was a perfectly balanced attack from the Lancers with 15 unique goal scorers in the rout. In goal, Tyler Carson was a force with just seven goals allowed in total and would tack on six saves and had a pair of penalty saves as well.
NEXT: The Lancers will be back in California next weekend as they compete in the Inland Empire Classic hosted by Redlands on September 4 and 5.
