#15 CBU's Season Comes to Close in Colorado

USAF, CO--- The five-seed #15 California Baptist men's water polo rounded out their season on Sunday afternoon in its third consecutive West Coast Conference Tournament Championship, falling to two-seed #9 San Jose State in a 15-9 match. The Lancers came off a stunning win over one-seed University of the Pacific yesterday afternoon, but battled more than just the Spartans during the championship game after a stomach bug made its way around the squad the night before. CBU put up a competitive fight against SJSU but ultimately fell to the higher seed, ending their season with a 24-11 record.

The first frame of the day saw a one-goal difference as CBU trailed the Spartans, but SJSU really began to pull away in the second frame after netting six goals. The #9 team in the country continued to pile on the goals and overwhelmed the Lancer defence to secure the win and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

California Baptist fought hard, with standout performances from Michael Abshier, Wyatt Bugbee, and Whitley Beamon, each contributing two goals to the team's total of nine. Phil Portisch, Paulo Hernandez, and Owen Fonua added to the scoreboard, but it wasn't enough to overcome San Jose's offense.

Despite falling short, the Lancers finished another successful season after returning to the WCC Tournament Championship match for the third time in the last three years and marking the program's fifth consecutive year with over 20 wins. Andrea Nuzzo finishes his sophomore season as the Lancers' leading goalscorer with 92 and 48 assists. Just behind was Alex Righetti with 58 goals, while between the posts, Tanner McCreary totaled 168 saves for CBU.
