SANTA BARBARA, Calif. ? Despite getting a match-high 16 kills from Donald Baliaba, California Baptist dropped a 3-0 (30-21, 32-30, 30-19) decision to NCAA Division I No. 14 UC Santa Barbara.
The Lancers (10-11) also got 14 kills from Adiel Tiedjop and a match-high 35 assists from Eric Plunkett. Corey Spence led the defense with eight digs.
California Baptist had just three blocks compared to the Gauchos 12.5 blocks. The Lancers hit just. 200 while UCSB hit .381.
In the opening game the Gauchos hit .385 and opened with a 6-0 run that put the Lancers in an early hole that it didn't climb out of. After taking the first game, UCSB fought off match point, in game two, at 30-29 from CBU. The Gauchos scored the next three points to take the match. Game two featured 18 ties and seven lead changes, but despite hitting .429 in that game, CBU fell behind 2-0 in the match. UCSB carried that momentum into the final game and never trailed to take the match.
The Lancers will now travel to UC San Diego, April 1, for a 7 p.m. contest.
