SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- California Baptist celebrated its highest ranking in school history with a thrilling 5-4 non-conference win over NCAA Division II UC San Diego late Wednesday night.
The Lancers, who just prior to the match, moved up one spot to No. 9 in the latest NAIA Top 25, improve to 7-2 with the win. They are just five wins away from posting a school-record for wins in a season.
After narrowly squeaking out two points after doubles, which was keyed by a slim 9-8 win at No. 1, the Lancers split the singles' matches right down the middle. With the match tied 4-4, Barbara Oliveira opened a 4-1 lead in the third set of her match at No. 1 singles. Natalie Varnay battled her way back, but Oliveira hung on for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win, clinching the win for the Lancers.
