KANSAS CITY, Mo. --- For the second straight year, California Baptist University's Marcela Montanha has been NAIA All-American second team as announced by the NAIA national office.
Montanha, a junior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, was 13-11 this season, splitting time between No. 1 and No. 2 singles for the NAIA's No. 6-ranked Lancers, who advanced to the national tournament for the second straight season. She had the majority of her success playing at No. 2, going 8-2. She was 5-9 at No. 1.
Montanha, who was one of 32 players to earn either first or second team recognition, went 7-3 in her last 10 matches and was 9-8 in Golden State Athletic Conference matches. She also teamed with Dunya Wren to play No. 1 doubles for the Lancers. Together, the duo went 13-6 this year, including a 9-5 mark in GSAC matches.
CBU enjoyed its finest season in program history. The Lancers won a school record 17 matches, going 17-8 this season. They finished tied for third in the GSAC at 13-5 and spent the entire season ranked in the NAIA Top 10. For the second straight year, they advanced to the NAIA National Tournament, losing, 5-4, in the round of 16 to Lindsey Wilson (Ky.).
