RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The NAIA's No. 7-ranked Concordia won two of three doubles to key its way to a 5-4 win over No. 6 California Baptist University Thursday in both team's regular-season finale.
The loss snaps the Lancers' program-record nine-game winning streak as they fall to 17-7 overall, 13-5 GSAC. The Eagles improve to 16-5, 14-4. Both teams will earn an at-large berth to the 2009 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championships May 12-16 in Mobile, Ala.
Play began with singles' matches, and the Lancers and Eagles split that right down the middle to carry a 3-3 tie into doubles. The Lancers won the first three matches to take a 3-0 lead, but the Eagles bounced back to even things up. Maiara Oliveira got things started with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win over Natalie Vanier at No. 6, and then Jelena Savic at No. 3 and Dunya Wren at No. 4 both picked up quick wins.
The Lancers then took a 4-3 lead when Oliveira and Raquel Vescovi defeated Vanier and Jaleh Mazaheri, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles. The Eagles, though, wrapped up the win with wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
“On her last singles' match on our home courts, it was great to see Dunya give that kind of performance,” said CBU Head Coach Chris Taylor. “We have lost our way in doubles, but we have a week to right the ship before heading to Mobile.”
