MOBILE, Ala. --- Less than 24 hours after making program history, California Baptist saw its 2008 campaign become history as the sixth-seed Lancers were upended, 5-0, by third-seed Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the 2008 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championships.
The loss brings an end to the finest season in program history as the Lancers finish 14-8 overall. The Lancers were ranked inside the NAIA's Top 10 all season, reaching a program-best No. 5 at one point. They won a school-record 14 matches, beat five nationally-ranked teams, made their first-ever postseason appearance and won their first-ever national tournament match, advancing to the quarterfinals.
“It was an outstanding season,” said second-year CBU head coach Chris Taylor. “I couldn't have expected more from the girls. They gave 100% and had to work hard just to get here. We just ran into a better team today.”
Lindsey Wilson improves to 17-3 with its 12th straight win and advances to its third straight semifinal.
The Blue Raiders quickly jumped to a 3-0 lead by sweeping all three doubles' matches by a combined 24-4 score. That momentum carried over into singles' play where they needed to pick up just two wins in six matches to clinch the match.
Candela Castanon defeated Barbara Oliveira (6-2, 6-1) at No. 1, and Agnieszka Wojtowicz downed Jessica Roddy (6-2, 6-1) at No. 6 to bring an end to the match. The four other courts were then stopped.
Nawchali De Silva was the only one ahead in her match as she was leading Laurie Anciaux (6-4, 2-1) at No. 5 when the match was called. Maiara Oliveira was two points away from forcing a third set at No. 2 against Daria Yablonskaya (3-6, 4-1).
