RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- The 2008 NAIA Women's Tennis All-American team was released, and California Baptist University had two players named to the team as Barbara Oliveira and Marcela Montanha became the first Lancers ever to earn All-American honors.
Oliveira became the first player in program history to earn first team honors. She went 14-7 while playing at No. 1 singles, which included four wins against other players named to the All-American team. She defeated Bay Daniels (Azusa Pacific), Hana Jurcovicova (Vanguard) twice and Romina Mrochen (Savannah Art & Design, Ga.). She also went 14-7 at No. 2 doubles while playing with Maiara Oliveira.
Montanha, who became the first Lancer to earn All-GSAC honors last season, was 16-4 this year playing at No. 2 singles, which includes an 8-1 mark in GSAC matches. She was also 13-9 while playing No. 1 doubles with Dunya Wren.
The Lancers enjoyed their finest season in program history, finishing an all-time best 14-8. They were ranked inside the NAIA's Top 10 all season, reaching a program-best No. 5 at one point. They won a school-record 14 matches, beat five nationally-ranked teams, made their first-ever postseason appearance and won their first-ever national tournament match, advancing to the quarterfinals.
