CLAREMONT, Calif. ? After giving its starters a break for the majority of the Lancer Invite, California Baptist used its rested team to push No. 5 Long Beach state in a 12-6 loss and ran over Pomona-Pitzer with a 10-4 win.
“We responded well today after getting some rest this weekend,” said CBU head coach Rick Rowland. “It really helped us stay in the game against Long Beach. Our intensity level was right where we wanted it to be and we gave Long Beach a pretty good run and took care of business against Pomona.”
Alan Ogden and Aaron Steiger each scored five goals on the day with Ogden scoring four against the Sagehens. Steiger also notched his 10th hat trick of the year against Pomona. Ogden compiled three assists and three steals between the two contests while Steiger recorded four assists and seven steals. Steiger also posted five steals against the Sagehens.
The Lancers opened the day against the fifth-ranked 49ers with Steiger leading the way with a pair of goals. Chris Gwinn, Chris Morgan, Ogden and Chris Toy all scored a goal. Peter Hines recorded a team-high three steals while Steiger posted two.
Zach Bowman also notched nine saves against Long Beach.
“We had several opportunities to score today, but we just couldn't put them away,” said Rowland. “We missed two penalty shots and we were in position to make it competitive, but we couldn't hang on in the fourth quarter. We played pretty well, but they (Long Beach State) just broke away from us in the fourth.”
Three other Lancers scored single goals against Pomona as Ogden and Steiger combined for seven of CBU's ten goals. Kellan Frericks, Morgan and Brent Troutman all found the back of the net once.
Steiger dished out four assists against the Sagehens while Ogden notched two assists and two steals in the win. Bowman also recorded nine saves in the cage.
“We were much better in our 6-on-5 opportunities against Pomona,” said Rowland. “We scored a lot off of our transitions. We were very strong in getting out ahead of the defense and we finished plays.”
California Baptist will now prepare for a doubleheader against a pair of NCAA Division I teams as George Washington and Iona pay a visit to the Lancer Aquatics Center Thursday. The Lancers and Colonials are scheduled for a 3 p.m. start with the Gales to follow at 7 p.m.
