CLAREMONT, Calif. --- Freshman Osvaldo Bastida scored twice, including the game-winner in the 74th minute to lift California Baptist University to a 2-1 non-conference win at NCAA Division III Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Wednesday evening.
The win is the Lancers' third straight to start the season as they improve to 3-0. It is just the fourth time in the history of the program the Lancers have won their first three games of the season and first since 2001.
The Stags fall to 0-1.
“The guys worked real hard to move forward from our last game,” said CBU first-year head coach Ryan Jorden. “Claremont is a good side that is going to win a lot of games this year, so it was a good environment for us to apply ourselves and execute those things that we want them to do.”
Bastida got things started in the 22nd minute when he scored an unassisted goal off a CMS turnover. However, the Stags answered back less than a minute into the second half when Stefan Gonzalez put home his first goal of the season.
“It was unfortunate that we gave that goal away,” said Jorden, “but the guys had a good work rate and paid attention to the details. I am pleased with the way they are working together to get tighter as a unit both on and off the field. It was a solid team effort all the way around tonight.”
With the game tied at 1-1 and less than 20 minutes left, Bastida came up with the clutch game-winner. Anthony Mascari played a ball to the freshman, who put away his third goal of the year in the 74th minute to lift the Lancers to the win. It was his first multi-goal game of his young career.
The Lancers out-shot the Stags, 15-8, and Jeff Redinger made two saves in getting his third win in goal.
CBU next hosts NCAA Division II Cal State L.A. Monday (Sept. 8) at 4:30 p.m. The game was originally slated to be in Los Angeles but was moved to Riverside earlier today since the Golden Eagles' new playing surface isn't completed.
